It could be argued many of Microsoft’s AI goodies launched as part of the bigCopilot+ PCpush are underwhelming.

But there’s one AI tool that could actually be a bit of a game changer, literally.

Control running on the Snapdragon X Elite utilising Auto SR

Control is one of the first titles to be supported by Auto SR on Windows 11.

Auto SR, however, supports ARM.

It’s one of the big new features on Copilot+ PCs powered by the newSnapdragon X Elite.

What is Auto SR and which PCs can use it?

Surface Laptop 7

Auto SR is currently exclusive to Copilot+ PCs using the new Snapdragon X series chips, such as the Surface Laptop 7.

Auto SR, on the other hand, is designed for existing games.

It’s similar in this regard to FSR being rolled into the OS on theSteam Deckbut for Windows 11.

So, older titles can’t benefit at this stage, nor can titles that leverage Vulkan or OpenGL.

Enabling Auto SR in Windows 11 24H2 Settings

Auto SR can be enabled or disabled both globally and on a per-game basis in Settings.

You’ll always know when Auto SR is running.

How to use Auto SR in your games

Turning on Auto SR is only the first step.

Auto SR is designed to automatically adjust the resolution of the game without user intervention, though.

Filtering Auto SR games on the worksonwoa.com website

Applying the Auto SR feature makes it easy to see games that the feature works with.

What you have to do in the game is adjust the resolution to something that Auto SR supports.

Right now, that’s anything under 900 pixels wide, such as 1280 x 720.

If you leave the game at native resolution or even 1080p, it won’t do anything.

The Auto SR enabled notification on Windows 11

When Auto SR is running, you’ll get a notification in the bottom right-hand corner.

Microsoft says that Auto SR may cause incompatible display resolutions to disappear from in-game tweaks.

This is by design, to make it easier to choose one that will work.

Does it actually work?

Setting the display resolution in Shadow of the Tomb Raider to a supported figure for Auto SR

To use Auto SR, you need to choose a resolution under 900 pixels wide, such as 1280 x 720.

Auto SR both works and doesn’t work, depending on the game.

In Control, a supported title, it behaved exactly as it was supposed to.

This speaks to the very work-in-progress nature of Auto SR right now.

NPU activity in Task Manager in Windows 11 24H2

Auto SR puts the NPU to work, and you can see how much in the Task Manager.

Capturing results isn’t easy, either.

Similarly, dropping the resolution resulted in an average FPS of 45.

That’s where Auto SR can really make a difference, albeit in very limited form right now.

7 Days to Die running with Auto SR enabled

7 Days to Die is one of the opt-in titles supported by Auto SR.

But DLSS started off small, too, and look where that is now.

The only way is up.
