Over the years I’ve been doing this job, I’ve had a lot ofmechanical keyboardsgrace my desk.
That might sound like a nothingburger, and I’d say I agree about 80% of the way.

It’s going to take something special to stop me using this thing.
Underneath it uses modern Kailh White switches, but on the outside this looks every bit the modern classic.

The UK layout of the 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard has fixed all of that.
The design isn’t just about how it looks, either.
The retro feel goes beyond just the look, too.

Keyboard makers were onto something back in the day.
The sound of the keys is also retro-esque.
Then again, at this price point, there’s nothing really to complain about.
The retro feel oozes through every aspect of this keyboard.
Oh, and some stickers to put on the buttons if you wish.
The buttons in particular caught my eye, because they’re potentially great news for accessibility.
And I’m not trying any harder.
The additional Super Buttons and the (admittedly tiny) joystick adds unique additional functionality to the Retro Mechanical Keyboard.
If you’re buying one, it’s surely toembrace the brown.
That version isn’t exactly the same as the C64-inspired design I have, but it’s close.
The Xbox version uses different switches, and has RGB backlighting.
A version of the keyboard I have here comes with an official Xbox collaborative paint job.
The C64 did not have backlit keys, therefore, neither does this version of the keyboard.
I always wanted one of these, and I’m so glad that it lived up to expectations.
And it’s brown.
