This isn’t to say you couldn’t use Steam Deck, but it won’t be as convenient.
With Steam Deck, you’ll need to feel comfortable using the Linux-based desktop side of the software.
Legion Go and ROG Ally both run Windows 11 out of the box while the Steam Deck runs the Linux-based SteamOS.
That’s because Steam Deck runs SteamOS rather than Windows 11.
Working in Linux will be fine for some students but could pose a problem for others.
But Legion Go and ROG Ally are easier to use like a laptop out of the box.
Since Legion Go runs Windows 11 and has a solid processor, it can run a variety of programs needed for school assignments.
As such, I did not list it as a student laptop alternative in this article.
These handhelds also offer Bluetooth, so you might connect accessories that way.
Better yet, get a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and then keep the USB free for charging.
You can connect a keyboard and mouse to Legion Go via a USB-C dongle or Bluetooth.

A built-in kickstand on the back of the Legion Go makes it easier to use like a computer on the go than the non-kickstand ROG Ally and Steam Deck.
This is something that laptops, Steam Deck, and ROG Ally cannot do.
When done, slip the handheld into your backpack and take it to your classes.

A microSD card is located on top of the Legion Go so you can easily add more storage.
