Avowed returns us to the world of Eora, and is the next major RPG from Obsidian Entertainment at Xbox.
Avowed may be a brand-new IP, but it’s not building a brand-new universe.
You guessed it: Pillars of Eternity.
It also takes place in a new part of Eora The Living Lands.
Avowed’s combat does look much improved in recent showings, and I got to talk to the team about it.
We discussed the obvious combat and gameplay improvements revealed duringXbox Games Showcase 2024, for one.
My exploits in The Living Lands didn’t end there, though.
DuringGamescom 2024, I had an opportunity to go hands-on with Avowed for the very first time.

Is there character creation in Avowed?
Avowed just oozes style, with a ton of original environments and architecture.
However, I can share my thoughts on it and some of the features we know of.
However,you willnotbe locked into any classes or categories in Avowed.
Apparently, this decision is twofold.
For one, your character originates from the Aedyr Empire, which is predominantly populated by Humans and Elves.
What is the gameplay like in Avowed?
The campaign and missions will also prominently feature dialogue options and branching paths.
This includes developing closer relationships with the companions you’ll meet along the way.
It’s worth mentioning that Obsidian has statedAvowed is very different from The Outer Worlds in many ways.
Is Avowed open world?
You choose who you play as in Avowed.
But are divided by loading screens.
This decision also plays into the story of Avowed.
As players progress the campaign and are shepherded into new areas, previous areas will become unavailable.
Obsidian wants combat in Avowed to be dynamic and visceral.
That means you gotta complete everything you want to do as you go.
Will Avowed have multiplayer or co-op?
This is a deliberate decision by Obsidian to focus on what the studio does best.
This is just one of many open areas in Avowed.
It was revealed thatAvowed was originally planned to feature co-op, possibly to help attract the attention of publishers.
Once Obsidian joined the Xbox family, though, that stopped being a consideration.
We’ll see when Avowed launches if Obsidian made the right decision.
You can explore The Living Lands with up to two NPC companions, but not your real-life friends.
